- OK, so after years of wanting to play Silent Hill 2, I finally decided to just buy a used PS2 and a copy of the Director's Cut. I bought the used PS2 from a reputable online seller and it came with a 24 month warranty, but it is completely full of dust! I think I need to clean it out.
- It’s bread.

Opinion: Downpour monster design (it's not good) Posted: 12 Nov 2020 03:44 PM PST https://mysilenthill.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/20120503-190652.jpg So I'm getting near to having played all the silent hill games back to back for Halloween. And they're all good in their own ways...except that rpg isometric thing. And even flawed games like Homecoming have amazing monster design and proper scares....but Downpour has been a real shock. The shock is that it's really good! Really interesting take and a nice variant on the by that point ...very familiar series. If anything it's like the 4th true silent hill game. And it has some very creative puzzles and rare other world changes and lots of clever and cool stuff backed by a mostly good story all combining to produce an 'almost' solid entry... But.......it was a flop and the last of the aaa titles and scored poorly for a reason. Id say beyond the glaring tech issues (frame rate not the best) the primary reason this game became the nail in the franchise's coffin was due to the truly abysmal and uninspired monster design. Not only are they poorly defined but their animation , game mechanics and even sounds are some of the weakest in the series. It's like they're place holders for something better...which never came due to possibly time constraints. Maybe spent so much time on the wonderful environments , cut scenes and clever world events that they didn't have time to make the monsters better than the most generic bargain basement cliche knockoffs. They are that bad imo or worse rhey simply are forgettable. The last thing a silent hill enemy should be is forgettable. The monsters. So I quite like the doll idea and how it becomes hide and seek...but it comes across as naff and never ever scary. After the first time it's looses what makes the first encounter fun. I quite like the weeping bat ceiling mechanic but it's just so goofy when it drops down and often relies on cheap jump scares. And then we have the absolute trash like screamer and prisoners which are the main monsters. They look and play way too similar for my liking. Yes they have neat ai but they're not even remotely anything of note and take you out of the otherwise great atmosphere when they turn up. And then we have the monacle man oddity aka blink and you miss him and the annoying as hell void and slide mess... which is monstrous...ly bad through over use. The generic bogeyman is fine but again...even less scary than origins butcher guy who atleast seemed like a silent hill character. The bogeyman is more like an extra from resident evil action titles. That's the problem. The above are not silent hill monsters at all. They have no place in its incredible and terrifying monsterverse. Also they don't seem to represent much of anything and are a far from the clever psychological nuisances of silent hill 2 or the sheer terror of silent hill 3 meat sack beasts. Even ancient sh1 monsters regularly scare the poop out you...me...everyone all these years later. What went wrong?I don't know what happened in development. I would like to but I could not find any thing online beyond a general disdain for the monster design. Many players wishing they had been better. More varied and more of them. Also the game features only one boss outside of the bogeyman which is an odd choice for silent hill and imo a mistake and missed opportunity. Yes the final boss is pretty neat and scary looking but not actually scary. And too little too late. The stolen mechanic from shattered memories seen with the void is not a substitute for a good boss. If anything it's annoying and though the first chase is fun and unexpected... it quickly becomes a chore. The dread you feel is less from fear and more about wanting it to be over so you can move on with the better aspects of the game. SpeculationIf I was to speculate why there are so few monsters and why they're so generic and effectively just humans who growl....I would say it wasn't intentional. I've seen some original art and they all look much cooler but still not at all scary. Id say they were early concepts which didn't go any further. Screamers look like drunk women and prisoners look like failed hellraiser wannabes werewolves. Bats look like ... slender bats. Just terrible. The animation of these monsters make their overall impact ... impactless. They look funny and often cause an unintentional laugh over a jump scare. RemasterI'm not sure if a 4k 60fps remaster could save these monsters. They would still look a, move and sound bad. And their game play loops would still be too repetitive and boring. It's a long game so to keep doing the same time and again was never going to go in their favour even if they had been well designed. Silent hill monsters should never be boring and laughable or a chore. But that's what they are in downpour. Possible remake designs. If rhey did and rhey should do a remake of downpour... then I'd like to see the monsters just thrown out and redesigned from scratch. I'd like to see every monster integrated more effectively into the water theme. When it rains I'd like to see larger or scarier variants. And mkre use of the UV light for monster weakness points maybe...? Screamers: Maybe something to do with liquid and water? They rise up from puddles and trap you in water maybe. They'd represent the kids drowning death. Prisoners: would have lots of chains to drag and throw to represent prison . They be covered in scars with violent twitching and slow then fast movements . With an almost static field around them. And a relentless chasing and violent thrashing. Both screamers and prisoners would have multiple design variants. Dolls: they'd be overtly sexy sex dolls and moaning alot but better camouflaged with surroundings. Real chameleons. When you look at them they stop moving and then teleport when you look away. So similar but more developed and the actual ghosts be less tron and more shadow beasts. Bats: would spend more time on ceilings and move faster and have far superior animations on the ground. They'd crawl along the ground too and only stand for close combat. And have arms like bat hooks. The bogeyman: could be headless or have a shrunken crushed head and even taller with a large scythe. Like a reaper. And under the rain coat he would be nothing at all just shadow or liquid like blood and when you hurt him massive pressurised blood or black water spout out and flood areas. And then come up with some new monsters. Maybe a mobile version of the wall corpse? Maybe some thing in the water much like homecoming had but better. Or a flying creature like from sh1. Or a pedophile thing which attempt to molest you. Who knows. Ok so those are my long ass rambles about the monsters of downpour. And how they could be improved by either a modder or a remake. I feel the monsters don't even matter because they're more of a distraction than a threat. Maybe you love them ? Or maybe you have ideas on how they could be improved ? May be you know why they suck so bad ? Shout out below if you want. Thanks for reading :-) [link] [comments]

I made my girlfriend play PT (and re-downloaded it) Posted: 12 Nov 2020 01:39 PM PST
Posted: 12 Nov 2020 08:07 AM PST I sold my own PS2 many years ago as it was failing and I wanted to upgrade to a PS3. I had noted that more or less all must play PS2 games I had not played had been well ported to the PS3 and was confident anything missing from that list would be ported too. But then came the disaster of the Silent Hill HD Collection. So I put it to the back of my mind, but recently I just really want to play Silent Hill! I keep seeing it brought up as a must play classic (almost two decades later) and it seemed like, when it comes down to it, the best way to play is on a PS2. So as per my title, the PS2 I picked up is chock full of dust (but guaranteed to work for at least 24 months by the seller). So I don't think there is a point in returning it as any console this old is likely to be the same. So I am thinking about opening it up and cleaning it out. Anyone ever done this? Are there any pitfalls that I need to watch out for? (Note: I also got a copy of Silent Hill 3, Viewtiful Joe and Killer 7.) [link] [comments]
