What if Konami had greenlit a sequel to ShSM ? Are there enough interesting ideas that could be refined? Or would it have just been a steaming pile like Homecoming?

(Opinion) Silent Hill 4 was the best Silent Hill.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 10:39 AM PST

I've been a huge fan of silent hill 4 ever since I was a kid, I was 5 years old when it came out. ( 20 1/2 now, damn time flys. ) I played every single Silent Hill game, but 4 was the first one I ever played. Truth be told: to me "Silent Hill 4: The Room" was quite frankly the best Silent Hill game in the series.

Many fans don't want to count 4 as part of the series from what I've seen and I've never had a chance to really talk to anyone about this. I know 4 wasn't originally supposed to be part of silent hill, it was supposed to be a new game called "Room 302". So yeah, I know it was a last minute game change but Team silent still pulled through.

It's scare was great, it's story was pretty silent hill like ( despite feeling like more of a spin off ) and I liked it's new approach. It connected to Silent Hill 2 more than anything with Walter Sullivan and the reference to writing on the wall in Silent Hill 2 "there was a hole here, it's gone now". There's also the fact that the manager or owner of the apartment building south Ashfield heights was Frank Sunderland ( James Sunderland's father. )

I think what I respect most about the game Besides it's scare being spot on, was the fact that it was the first game in the series to use a character on the Autistic/ADHD spectrum. Henry Townshend has his own analytic video about exactly that but, that's a story for another day. What I think is even cooler is that his look is actually inspired by Leon Kennedy a little.

The Game's atmosphere was one of the most ominous and definitely the overall creepiest. It's gameplay was probably one thing that worked against it for me but it wasn't bad. I liked that most of it was in a strange dream like state too, even though it wasn't at the same time. The OST for Silent Hill 4 was another strength if you ask me, it's creepy yet depressing vibe felt just like classic Silent Hill. The only thing I can say it's missing was the emotional moments 1-3 had, as this game can be a drama at many points.

This one was pretty much straight forward horror. Traditionally, it wasn't the same Silent Hill look or vibe by any means of the first three games. Usually, I would find that bad for a franchise but Team silent really made this unique vibe in Silent Hill 4 work really well for the series, as risky as it was. I think this risk actually worked in the games favor.

The creatures in the game were very creepy and for its time the design of them was enough for little kid me to wanna turn away from the screen at times. I used to just be mesmerized by the two headed baby creature in the booklet my Silent Hill 4 copy had came with.

All in all, Silent Hill 4: The Room is the game that truly inspired me to become a Horror Writer. Which is why I have that game to thank for me working towards that career today. I really do think Silent Hill 4: The room needs to get more recognition then some fans give it.

Anybody else love Brookhaven hospital in 2 &3?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 03:12 AM PST

Some people complain about the reuse in 3, but I think it's genuinely amazing, isn't it one if not the only point in the series where we get a direct comparison of two peoples version of the same place in the other world?

    James was dark & depressing

While Heathers was hellish & completely different

    Silent Hill 2 (OST)

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 12:34 PM PST

So I have introduced my girlfriend to Silent Hill 2. I havn't really been able to truly share this game with anyone like this before, ive only really been able to simply recommend the series as a whole. Immediately after listening to the opening letter sequence right in the beginning , I prefaced that these games soundtracks were fucking bomb, and she agreed that that opening scene was a powerful opening. Thinking more on it on my own later that day, Mary's letter music isn't on the actual OST. Can anyone have any explanation as to why? Its a very beautiful track and pretty much lays the emotional foundation to connect with James as a character right in the beginning. I'm kind of baffled that it isn't.

We will never ever ever see another Silent Hill...

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:57 PM PST

We will never ever ever see another Silent Hill game from Konami (that's not on your phone or in Vegas). And the sooner we can accept that, the sooner we can be at peace. We can mod RE2 into Silent Hill, and we can even make our own Silent Hill. It's not like Konami is gonna care about their brand.

    Battle of the Protagonists!

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 01:56 PM PST

Just a fun post to encourage discussion:

Battle of the Silent Hill protagonists - all put into an open arena. Who would win in a realistic draw?

Combatants: Harry Mason, James Sunderland, Heather Mason, Henry Townsend, Travis Grady, Alex Shepard, Harry Mason (S.M), Murphy Pendelton.

Round One: Fisticuffs, no weapons whatsoever. It's a fight to the death between the combatants.

Round Two: Each combatant has the arsenal of weaponry from their respective first-time playthrough.

Round Three: Each combatant has a full arsenal (including all unlockable weapons) available for use.

Bonus Round: Pyramid Head, Walter Sullivan, and the Boogeyman (Downpour) have entered the arena. Can the rest of the protagonists team up to defeat them?

So I’ve been struggling to get any of the original soundtracks from games 1-4 to work on Spotify, any ideas on why? I’m using an IOS device, if that has anything to do with it.

What’s your ranking of the SH Villains?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 08:37 AM PST

Personally I think it'd go like this for me:

    1. Walter Sullivan. The whole game revolves around him and he's probably the most disturbing and complex out of them all. Plus it's awesome how you learn about him all the way back in SH2.

    2. Claudia Wolf. Sympathetic and tragic to a point. Love how she's aware of the suffering she rains down on people yet still she's determined to think she's good and doesn't even expect God to save her. The most benevolent and selfless out of them all, good or bad as that might be.

    3. Maria. Love how she's a villain of circumstance. She's not even evil nor wants to do any harm as she's just a tool of the town to teach James a lesson. It's until she realizes she's disposable that she snaps and targets all the town's rage towards her creator for the wrongs he did.

    4. Dahlia Gillespie (SH1). The original one. Even if her plans and attitudes were evil cliches, she was interesting enough to carry Alessa's story and thus the game's main conflict. Complex actions, simple personality and goals.

    5. Anne Cunningham. Villain out of circumstance as well. I think her plan was overly complicated and everything happened just because neither she or Murphy could just spit out a little more info to each other , but she was interesting in the sense that she was probably the only antagonist who also lived her own personal hell while the protagonist did as well.

    6. Judge Holloway. I think the most interesting part of her is Shepherd's Glen's pact with God. Meaning, she's just a means to tell that story. Her as a single entity is kinda boring. Kind understand where she's coming from but she still was just a plain one.

    7. Dahlia Gillespie (Origins). I don't really consider Kaufman to be the villain here but he was way better than Dahlia in Origins. She was a more cliched version of her SH1 self and she didn't bring any interesting lore aspect other than what we already knew. Also what's up with her sudden drastic change of appearance?

    8. George Sewell. Eh.

    SH1 + SH3 remake into ONE GAME?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:38 AM PST

Super odd idea here. Do you think it would be possible to tell SH1 and SH3's stories in one single game? I imagine it told in parallel storylines with switching protagonists (like in Siren games) or like in RE2 with A and B storylines.

Sounds crazy. but hey, what do you think?

    SH 2's WORST boss fight/cutscene.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:29 AM PST

    SH 2's WORST boss fight/cutscene.

To make it clear, I love SH 2, but I hate Pyramid Head's final appearance in the Lakeview Hotel since it's kinda destroying his image of a unique and ultimate antagonist that embodies all James's inner conflicts.

    https://preview.redd.it/7za7b9wi3f441.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=87b5f13bea349df23e9e374f4f9f4b07b5a2bf18

First, now there are apparently more than one Pyramid Head's, which makes him feel more like your standard enemy and less unique.

Second, instead of his iconic Great Knife, he's wielding much less impressive and memorable spear thingy.

I know, that Silent wasn't aware of Pyramid Head' and hos weapon glorious future and they were aiming for some dualism symbology (Mary - Maria) but it's just doesn't work for me.

    Anyways, what do you think?

Can you disable the fog completely in Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition? (PC)

    Posted: 13 Dec 2019 01:43 AM PST

Yeah I know it's part of the game's atmosphere and everything, but I've played the game before and want to try this out. It'll be pretty awesome to see everything far in the distance. Is this possible somehow? Maybe by editing d3d8.ini or something?

The boat section of SH2 on PCSX2

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:03 PM PST

Hey guys, so I have been playing SH2 on Hard mode using the PCSX2 emulator and I find the boat section impossible to complete. I don't think a keyboard can match the motions that a joystick makes to move the oars, so I am stuck at this section. Is it impossible to do this section with just a keyboard? For reference, my left joystick is bound to WASD and my right joystick is set to IJKL. Also, before you ask, I do not have a controller to plug in, so I can't do that either.
