My favourite thing about Silent Hill 4 Posted: 22 Dec 2019 05:16 PM PST The one that stuck with me the most was the hauntings in the apartment, I just loved the idea your safe haven can be breached. And the hauntings are quite terrifying to someone who lives alone irl. I wouldn't mind a game based around your house being breached by paranormal activity. (Visage kind of scratches it but it isn't as nutty like a flesh covered couch.) Another game called knock knock, I loved that concept too. Your suppose to be alone but you have some unwelcome guests coming over, [link] [comments] | ||

Posted: 22 Dec 2019 08:26 AM PST You know, stuff that gets recommended often on /r/silenthill like in terms of music you'll often hear Portishead, Nine Inch Nails, Tim Hecker and Lustmord, with games you'll often get recommended RE, Fatal Frame, random indie horrors, etc, and with movies it's usually Jacob's Ladder and Lynch movies. Outside of that every now and then you'll hear about books, and that's typically Lovecraft, Stephen King and House of Leaves. I just don't know, even with the influences it seems like absolutely nothing is like SH, or compares (at least in this niche). Personally I love Yamaoka's OSTs, the ambient is very deep and atmospheric, but manages to sound at least a little melodic. The trip hop sounds amazing, and the dark ambient and industrial tracks are extremely eerie. But when I hear recommendations like Portishead my first thoughts are "wow, this genre could've been so great, but it's filled with awful vocals". Nine Inch Nails is very "ok" imo, and not similar to SH at all. Tim Hecker and Lustmord are awful repetitive bland noise, and so is Cryo Chamber and everything that gets recommended. I really, really don't like that stuff. Yamaoka tears their stuff to shreds. This is definitely my least favorite department when it comes to recommendations. Then, we get to games. Games are kinda tricky, I'm way more of a game guy than a movies guy, but horror games are all over the place in terms of quality, so I can't really claim to be a fan of horror games as a whole. RE is too "American" for my tastes, it seems to rely exclusively on combat, jumpscares, exploiting phobias like with the giant tarantulas, etc, which I find pretty lame, while there are also some more atmospheric horror games, but these typically get much more indie and experimental than SH so I find them not as great as a whole. I still have a lot to go through, though. Going to give Fatal Frame a shot during Christmas. Movies. Oh boy, normally I'm not into movies at all (I'm more of an anime and games kinda guy), but seeing how anime doesn't really do horror much I feel like I have to resort to movies for this niche. So, I've seen quite a few movies (Jacob's Ladder, a few Lynch movies, a few classics like Halloween, The Fly and The Exorcist, some psychological horrors, etc), but I don't think there's much for me there. First off, I think the very idea of having actors kinda ruins the atmosphere (I think old 3D graphics like SH1-4 pull off the horror vibe the best), most movies seem to have crappy settings (old mansions, old villages, etc) while I prefer SH's more modern setting (kudos to Jacob's Ladder in this regard though), horror movie OSTs are either cheesy 80s synth stuff or cheesy dissonant orchestral music, horror movies seem to employ jumpscares MUCH more than SH would (even in psychological/atmospheric movies) and the general stories and tropes are just so bland and annoying. I do feel like J-Horror might be more up my alley from what I've heard, and I've seen a couple so far, but I still don't think movies are for me and I doubt I'll ever find something similar or comparable to SH there. Finally, the books. I've tried to get into Stephen King's It twice but I got bored every time and just gave up. House of Leaves was far more intriguing, but it's so pretentious and hard to read that I just can't really finish it. Lovecraft as a whole just seems like a cheesefest, not a fan. Honestly, I really doubt that there's anything comparable to SH in the entire horror world, and maybe I should just give up (once I've finished Fatal Frame, that is). Anyways, your turn.
