    This might be an unpopular post but I feel like something has to be said about the state of this subreddit

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 03:10 PM PDT

    I'm happy with the recent introduction of Silent Hill in Dead by Daylight and the influx of new people visiting but it's slightly spiralling somewhat, the quality of posts and the constant asking of the same questions is just painful, the memes are also awful and it's disheartening to see it

    I get it, we're all happy and excited, potentially on route to an announcement for a new game, and if not it's the first piece of content that Konami has thrown our way in years but if this sub does end up becoming bigger then things need to change, some subreddits have stickies for this but I feel like we need one for both commonly asked questions and also on how to start with the series if you're completely new to it all

    Also forgive me but most of the memes now are just shitpost quality and terribly cringe, we have another subreddit for low effort posts so direct your content over there, otherwise I apologise for my rant but I felt like sharing my two cents on our current ordeal, nothing I've just said has to be taken seriously and if I've offended then I apologise profusely

    Silent Hill 1/2 Movie

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 03:17 PM PDT

    Random curiosity, but if Hollywood decided to make Faithful adaptions of the Silent Hill 1 and 2 games, which of the multiple endings would you like to see as the ending for each movie?

    This Is How Damage Registration May Work in SH2

    Hello, my dear residents!

    My choice of words for the title is intentional, as what you and I are about to tackle is indeed a system of damage registration, rather than damage count or anything else.

    Programming of the 2nd to 4th game has been a mystery since their release. And it all thanks to SH2 engine, so cryptic, yet so effective and genius that even a team responsible for HD Collection could not fully embrace its features and intricacies even with a direct access to source material. For 20 something years we haven't been sure not only about generation of weather effects, we still don't have many clues about some basic mechanics, like the combat. It's not like we don't know completely what's going on the technical level, but look how long it takes Enhanced Edition team to restore pretty much *everything*. So we can never be sure how exactly SH2-4 work.

    The combat is a particularly interesting part of these games and even more so, how does the game register damage. Based on experience you could say that:

    • Enemies don't have set HP (much like in early RE games);
    • Average HP bar for each enemy changes depending on the difficulty level;
    • Base damage of your weapons change depending on the difficulty level;
    • Enemies don't have immunities (including bosses).

    Sounds plausible, right? That's exactly how most of us feel it all works, don't we? What if I say you that each of the above is false… maybe.

    Thanks to u/IrisMoroc who [posted recently a link to scanned guides for some SH games] (https://old.reddit.com/r/silenthill/comments/hgdq1s/japanese_guidebooks_for_silent_hill_12_and_4_have/) I was able to find a very interesting chart in German guide for SH2. Now, I need to warn you. It's a well-known fact that «official» guides tend to be incredibly inaccurate, so take everything from now on with a grain of salt.

    PH first encounter

    So, from this chart for PH first encounter (which you hopefully can see) we can learn that Pyramid Head apparently has a high resistance against a Wooden Plank (Brett) on Normal and High difficulty levels. o, from this chart for PH first encounter (which you hopefully can see) we can learn that Pyramid Head apparently has a high resistance against a Wooden Plank (Brett) on Normal and High difficulty levels. The sign used for this weapon says that using it highly ineffective and is likely to be problematic. It doesn't say that PH is immune to it, however it suggests an interesting possibility. The sign used for this weapon says that using it highly ineffective and is likely to be problematic. It doesn't say that PH is immune to it, however it suggests an interesting possibility.

    Aside obvious dangers of jumping on a dude in a man-sized helmet with a piece of wood, this chart may also mean that no matter how much or how hard you beat PH with it his «HP» (which is tied to timer during both boss fights) won't go down. I'm making a strong connection with time here for a reason. As you can see, on Beginner and Light difficulty if you don't attack Pyramid Head at all he will go away on his own (what is supported by the note bellow). Now in the context of the fight «goes away on his own» means that he goes away sooner than the timer runs out. And it's really important, as you can knock… seconds, I guess, off the timer by shooting a set amount of bullets into him. Just running away is in always all cases guarantees to end the battle later, as this way you are tied to the in-game timer. At the very least, it's what this chart, personal experience and a reasonable amount od time spent on watching various streams and speedruns suggest.

    If it's true, then what does it tell us about the Wooden Plank? Why cannot ever deal enough damage to to make the timer stop earlier? Remember, though it is indeed not easy and extremely risky to go against PH with this weapon the chart also seems to suggest that even if you hit him, it won't have any effect on the boss. This may mean, that:

    • The developers put a special script that prevents the game from *registering* damage from the Wooden Plank or;
    • The damage is registered only if base damage of the weapon is equal or higher a set percentage of enemy's health or;
    • OP overthinks and the authors of the guide didn't put any info on the Wooden Plank simply because it's inconvenient and not because the said Wooden Plank fails to deal a certain amount of damage.

    It's probably the last one, but hence the theory flair, you know. What if *in SH2 and possibly 3 and 4 the game **registers** the damage only if specific requirements are satisfied?* Let's do some math.

    'Enemy HP=400'

    'Minimal percentage requirement=25% of enemy's health'

    You can't knock off 1 health point, base damage of your weapon must be equal or higher to 25% of health of the said enemy. If your weapon has a base damage only 24% this damage won't be registered. So,

    'Base weapon damage=100 points'

    '100 is 25% of 400 => you will deal damage worth of 100 health points'

    'base weapon damage=300 points. It's greater than 25% of enemy's health, so you deal damage worth of 300 points'

    'base damage is 50 points'

    '50 points is 12,5%, 12,5% is lesser than 25%. You deal no damage'

    Even if your damage is registered you receive great penalties. And that's why it's impossible to make the time run out earlier in the first PH encounter. You deal too little damage to either register the said damage or to register it without penalties.

    I suspect something close to this system existing in the game, as it would allow to keep all HP bars and base damage of all weapons the same for all difficulty levels. The only things that would change are requirements for damage registration. And hosnestly it sounds easier to do everything this way instead of rebalancing the whole game 4 times. Don't forget that SH2 was in development for just 2 years and this time includes development of the engine.

    To be fair, even if it's what the guide suggests (which it isn't, probably), it is a little unfair to get information on the whole combat system through boss fight data. The developers have a chance to break rules with them and apply additional variables. I can't disagree with it, however I want to remind you that the developers are forced to deal with limitations they themselves create in order to make the game work. If they do something that is beyond game's logic, it wouldn't simply work. That's why Solair in DaS 1 and Master Belch in Mother 2 have a special items associated with them, instead of having infinite lighting spear attack (that doesn't counts as a spell) or a script for infinite health bar reset. There's something already in the code that allows to build entire boss fights off basic mechanics.

    Well, that's it for now. Thank you for your patience and attention!

    P.S. I hope you can see the images, but in any case I will type down in the comments original text and give a brief summary.

    Silent Hill HD Collection

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:51 PM PDT

    Hey guys I'm new to this game and I've been looking for a way to play it. I saw the SH he collection and I ordered it. I didn't feel like spending money on an original Xbox or buying a ps2 to play it. After seeing all these videos and reviews on it, and I'm having second thoughts. Is it really that bad? I wanna play these games really badly.

    What is it about Silent Hill that really makes you enjoy this game?

    Hi I've been curious about it for a long time and I think it would be fun to hear some of the reasons that made you fall for this game.

    For me, it was the loneliness and being on my own. Besides, I really enjoy foggy weather! :D

    Question about the HD remakes of silent hill 2 and 3

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 02:15 PM PDT

    I have been playing the HD collections for the ps3. As of right now I have finish silent hill 2 with no bugs, glitches or haven't experience anything bad. Now im on to silent hills 3 and it runs faster then 2 I believe? I'm just wondering if I just haven't notice what all the bad things that happen in this "bad port" or I haven't gotten to it yet with the third game. I'm also new to the series since of the new silent hill chapter in the dead by daylight game.

    SH3: PCSX2 or PC w/fixes?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:30 PM PDT

    With no access to buying a PS1 or PS2, i resorted to emulating the Silent Hill games.

    SH1 ran perfectly on ePSXe, but when it came to SH2 & 3, I had some issues on PCSX2.

    The biggest problem is during any fmv or cutscene, the framerate would slowdown, and in return the game speed, making all the characters, dialogue, and music slow down, and it was really immersion brekaing.

    To combat this, i'm thinking of downloading the PC version with the fixes by Steam006.

    Is this a better way to play? Or should I keep using PCSX2? And if I SHOULD use PCSX2, what config should I use to make it play well?

    Keep in mind i have an AMD Radeon Rx 550, Intel i3 3200, and 10GB of RAM (not the best, but should be more than capable of playing PS2 games)
