How to play Silent Hill 1-4: A Comprehensive Guide Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:33 PM PDT Due to the recent influx of users new to the franchise wanting to know how to play these games easily, I have decided to make a post detailing how to do so, hopefully in a simple way. First of all, all 4 original Silent Hill games were made with controllers in mind. If you are using a PC and have a controller compatible with PC gaming it is best to plug it in before starting any of these games, whether using an emulator or native PC version, though playing with a keyboard is also possible. If using PC versions, you can configure your keyboard in-game. If using an emulator, use the input settings of the emulator to configure your keyboard to your preference. If you choose to emulate any of these games, the process of obtaining roms or disc image files is the same for all 4 of them. That being said... SILENT HILL The original Silent Hill is fairly straight forward. You have a few options: own an original Playstation and the retail disc for Silent Hill, both of which can be found on online markets, such as Ebay. Or, use an emulator and a disc image file (or ROM). You can also acquire it through PSP, PS3, and PS Vita Store. If using an emulator, any Playstation emulator will work, the one you choose is up to you, many have pros and cons. I like to use ePSXe. If you choose emulation, you can create a disc image file or rom from a retail disc you own using programs such as Imgburn. Downloading a rom from websites that have rom files is also possible, but I would discourage it as it is illegal. Once you have the emulator and a rom of Silent Hill, all you have to do is configure your controller and video settings from within your emulator of choice, then open your rom through the emulator. Here are my settings for ePSXe, adjust to your display resolution and you should be fine. Keep in mind, desktop resolution should be the resolution of the screen you are using, and window size should be the size at which you want the game to display. Because the game was intended to be played in 4:3 resolution, the window size should be in a 4:3 resolution that will fit you TV or monitor. So window size should be 1440 x 1080 for 1080p screens. SILENT HILL 2 Silent Hill 2 has PS2, PC, and Xbox versions. Get the Restless Dreams, Directors Cut, or Greatest Hits version (no difference). These versions of the game come with an extra scenario you can play after you complete the main game. I personally recommend the PC version. You can also buy the HD Collection for Xbox 360 or PS3, which contains both SH2 and SH3, though it is not recommended. Once again, If using a PS2 or Xbox, buy the game off Ebay. Otherwise, you will be playing the PC version or emulating the PS2 version. For emulating, I would recommend PCSX2. If you choose to emulate SH2 with PCSX2, the process is largely the same as SH1 with ePSXE, and is rather straight forward regardless. There are still plenty of resources on google if you get stuck, but it's pretty simple. If you choose PC, I would recommend getting the Restless Dreams version from a website called myabandonware. SH2 is technically abandonware at this point and Konami doesn't seem to care, so I assume this method of obtaining the game is legal. The download is verified to be safe by all that have downloaded it, myself included. There are other, perhaps simpler, ways of acquiring this PC version but that would be illegal. After installing the game, install Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition and follow ALL instructions VERY CLOSELY. It's fairly simple but there is little margin for error. This is a mod that fixes everything wrong with SH2 PC and allows many user configurable options. If you do not download this mod and all of it's required components you will get severe problems in-game and it will be borderline unplayable. SILENT HILL 3 Same as before, Ebay for console versions. Emulator if you want to play the console versions on PC. Same process as SH2. You can also buy the HD Collection for Xbox 360 or PS3, which contains both SH2 and SH3, though it is not recommended. I would Recommend the PC version of SH3 though, as it runs nicer on low end PCs than PS2 emulators do, and the framerate is uncapped, unlike SH1 or SH2. The PC version of this game is also available on myabandonware. SH3 PC doesn't really require a fix as it runs fine without one, but the image will be stretched horizontally to fit widescreen TVs and monitors, which were not common at the time. So, It is recommended to download one of multiple mods to fix that issue as well as improve various aspects of the game, such as FOV, shadow resolution, Depth Of Field Resolution, etc. I recommend this fix as it has always worked perfectly for me. There are other fixes available, google will show a few. SILENT HILL 4 Same as before, Ebay for console versions. Emulator if you want to play the console versions on PC. Same process as SH2/SH3. This is the only time I recommend console or PS2 emulators, because SH4 PC is missing a few (relatively minor) features from the console versions. If you do not know about them you will not miss them though. SH4 PC is not available through myabandonware so I cannot speak for other places you could possibly download it from. It may be unsafe or illegal to do so. Use your best judgement. Refer to PC Gaming Wiki to see the different fixes for SH4. All of them have pros and cons, and none of them unanimously work for everyone, so I suggest trying one, or all, of them and seeing which works best for you. Well, there you have it! How to play all 4 original Silent Hill games in 2020. If anyone has any problems with any of the emulated versions, these problems could be unique to your computer, or the build version of the emulator that you are using, but googling the issue usually provides helpful results. If any of the fix mods for 2/3/4 on PC don't work correctly or you're confused on how to use them, PC Gaming Wiki is a great resource. And of course, read all of the instructions and readme files that come with these mods. If there is anything inaccurate about this post, or if you feel like I should add something, or if anything is too unclear, feel free to let me know! [link] [comments]

New to the series. Playing HD collection Posted: 28 Jun 2020 05:54 PM PDT I am a new silent hill player coming over from Dead by Daylight and am loving the games so far. I am playing 2&3 on Xbox one with the HD collection and was wondering if it's really that bad to be playing as I've seen a lot of hate for the HD collection but it is my only way to play the game. Am I really missing out on that much by playing the HD collection? [link] [comments]
How do you aim down in Silent Hill 3? Posted: 28 Jun 2020 03:39 PM PDT For a bit of pretext I've beaten Silent Hill 1, 2, 0 and Downpour so I'm not necessarily new to the series. Had no problems with any of those, but I've never played SH3 to completion so I figured I'd give it a shot. I've never had any problems with aiming and shooting in the older titles, I beat hard mode on SH2 without much of a fuss. But for some reason I just can't figure out aiming in SH3. It makes no sense to me, so many times I'm fighting an enemy that's low to the ground like a dog or a slurper and I'll just shoot over their head while they chew my damn ankles off. Because of this I've spent the majority of the game just running past everything and healing up the damage but I figured I should figure this out eventually. Early on I tried to figure out how to melee the dogs to death and it just didn't work, every time I approached one Heather would just swing the knife over their heads and they'd bite my ass. Any advice on what to do? When I get close enough to an enemy to where they're in flashlight range I just raise my weapon and start shooting, assuming that's all I need to do. It doesn't even lock onto the standing mobs the majority of the time unless they're right in my face beating me to death, most of the time I have to manually aim her. I am using an emulator (PCSX2), I don't know if this would change anything. The ROM and BIOS are ones I dumped myself with my physical copies though. EDIT: Here's a video demoing what I mean. I can't get her to aim down at low enemies. [link] [comments]
I feel Catherine shares some similarities to Silent Hill 2 [SPOILER WARNING] Posted: 28 Jun 2020 07:54 PM PDT Mostly in the sense of Catherine, the woman that Vincent is cheating on his girlfriend Katherine with. Catherine apparently turns out to be a succubus or something, so it makes sense that she'd have a similar concept as Maria, therefore Catherine represents a glorified version of the woman he loves. While he loves Katherine, Catherine may resemble what he wants from Katherine lust wise. Idk [link] [comments]
Trying to learn about Silent Hill lore Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:52 PM PDT Any good YouTube videos or recommendations? It seems very interesting and fun to play but I would love to learn about the lore first before playing the games. FYI I know nothing of silent hill and have never seen any silent hill gameplay. Thanks for any help! :) [link] [comments]
DBD fan with questions about Silent Hill 1 and 2 Posted: 27 Jun 2020 02:54 PM PDT So preface: I've known about Silent Hill for some time just reading about it and watching videos and talking to my brother about it, but after the release of Pyramid Head I figured I might as well start playing them. I've played through 1 and 2 and naturally had to google various things to fully understand, but I still have questions. All that to say I know it can be annoying having new folk asking easily google-able questions, but I've tried and was hoping some of ya'll could help me understand some things. First, Silent Hill 1: 2) Did Alessa want Harry to kill her, or was she just going to kill herself? I'm fairly certain I read that Harry wasn't really a part of her plan, but it would make sense if he was, as that would be why he was in the Fog World, and why he and Cybil see Cheryl (or at least the astral projection/illusion version). I could also understand this being why Cybil is in the Fog World, as she would be an aid to Harry, but it still doesn't explain Kaufmann. 3) What's with the "Astral Projections" of Alessa that Harry sees? At a few points in time, Harry sees Alessa and she then vanishes after a moment. I could see this being the Astral Projection that Alessa has used to place the seals of metatron, but why does Harry happen to see them? I'm just confused as to why exactly this happens. Silent Hill 2: 2) Is Laura in Silent Hill for a reason related to James, or just coincidence? My understanding is that she's there because Mary's letter to her, and since Mary was like a Mother to her she went to find her, misinterpreting the "quiet, beautiful place" as Silent Hill. She got there by finding Eddie at some point, and is able to traverse the town because of her innocence/lack of trauma/something similar, resulting in a version of Silent Hill without monsters, and potentially even being a nice, pretty place for her. But did Silent Hill draw in Laura purposefully along with James, or is it complete coincidence? Why would it even draw her in? Not to mention if she went there on her own volition without being pulled in by Silent Hill, why would she be in the Fog World at all? Thanks for any answers, and again sorry if these are easily google-able, but I've been looking for them and couldn't find answers. Maybe I just have bad google-fu. [link] [comments] |
