Are the first 4 games good?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:51 PM PDT

I'm new to the franchise and I have some money to buy the first four games but I have heard a lot of "bad" things about 3 and 4

So I want to know, should I play only the first two or the other ones are not that bad?

Edit: Thanks for the answers, I´ll start playing Silent Hill soon

The Night Land - a terrifying vision of the future that reminded me of Silent Hill

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:51 AM PDT

I recently saw The House Of Leaves recommended here, and I too would like to recommend a book that a lot of horror fans, but Silent Hill fans in particular, might appreciate.

Unfortunately, it is a somewhat flawed masterpiece and takes a bit to properly explain why I say "flawed", but hear me out, if you've got the time. I'm pretty sure, you won't regret it. AND: There also exists a non-flawed version. I will also get into that below. It's a bit complicated and I know I'm submitting quite the wall of text here, but please bear with me!

So: The book is called "The Night Land" and was written by an English author called William Hope Hodgson, published in 1912. The story begins in the 17th century, describing how a man falls in love with a woman, they become husband and wife, but eventually she dies and he mourns her death. But then, the narrator suddenly finds himself dreaming of a reincarnation of himself millions of years into the future, in which his wife was also reincarnated and he eventually tries to find her again.

But: In this future, the sun has long died and the last few million humans live in a great futuristic pyramid, called "The Last Redoubt", while the entire world has turned into eternal night. The pyramid is protected by a barrier, but outside it lies what they now refer to as "the Night Land". The Night Land is filled with unimaginable terrors, creatures, unknown forces and bizarre places that often reminded me of what it might look like had the Otherworld overtaken the entire Earth in the far future.

Speaking of bizarre places out there in the Night Land: Some have names that can already send a shiver down my spine. Places like "The Road Where The Silent Ones Walk", a road of unknown origin, on which sometimes odd tall and shrowded beings can be seen that silently follow its path. Or "The Headland From Which Strange Things Peer". Or "The Country Whence Comes The Great Laughter", a far-away place, from where bone-chilling laughter can sometimes be heard echoing across the dark land, but no one knows what is causing it... There is the "Thing That Nods", something huge and very far away, that no one can truly identify the shape of, but it seems to be gigantic and to... constantly move, as if nodding. There is "The House Of Silence", a Victorian house far to the north of the pyramid in which light can always be seen shining, but no sound can ever be heard, and it is said to be the source of great evil, that no one should ever go near, let alone enter, lest they want to risk not only their body, but their entire soul being destroyed.

(Someone on Deviantart actually made a map of the area surrounding the pyramid, but beware of spoilers of course and only look at it, if you're prepared to see spoiler-ish things: https://www.deviantart.com/ivymantled/art/The-Night-Land-Map-294673786)

There are also 5 terrifying beings, called the Watchers, grotesque creatures the size of a mountain in various directions that just sit there on the horizon, staring at the Pyramid without having moved for centuries, just constantly staring at it, possibly waiting for the barrier to fail one day. That thought alone is nightmarish to me. Think of waking up every day in an always dark world without a sun – and whenever you look out into the Night Land (which is only illuminated by the glow of residual vulcanism, fire holes, strange pits, and the like), you will see a gigantic mass of pure ill-will and evil intent on the horizon with huge eyes staring into your direction, just staring... and waiting...

Actually, if you want a GREAT introduction into the terrifying world of this book, I found a very well-done video on Youtube which I highly recommend you watch to get a better feel for what I'm talking about:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy_RiohWtXE

Now, all of this sounds awesome, right? At least it did to me. The entire concept of this strange Night Land filled with unknown creatures, and with bizarre places of such terror that they cannot even be understood by human minds, often reminded me of the bizareness of the Otherworld and the fascination I felt when walking through parts of the Otherworld in SH.

So then why is the book flawed? What's the catch?

Well, for whatever reason I don't know, William Hope Hodgson decided to write the entire novel in a VERY hard-to-read style that was apparently intended to reflect the 17th century, but... more than anything, it just makes it hard to read and sometimes even quite the chore to get through certain passages. (The second half of the book also contains some passages with rather questionable views on and treatment of women, which I suppose is unfortunately a product of the times it was written in – which doesn't really excuse it, I guess, but I would rather scold the entire society of that time for this than just the author personally.)

At first, I thought, maybe the author just always wrote like that, but no, he also wrote other horror stories in much more perfectly normal early 20th century English, and not this odd convoluted pseudo-17th-century style he used for The Night Land. So that is my only major gripe with the book: It can be quite the chore to read. However, the Night Land itself is so fascinatingly terrifying that I still managed to go through the entire book and absolutely do not regret it. An audiobook version of it is actually in the public domain and can be found on Youtube (I'll link it at the bottom).

And now, finally, here is why I said that there also is a non-flawed version: An American author called James Stoddard has actually REWRITTEN the entire book into contemporary English! It's called "The Night Land, A Story Retold" and was published in 2011. In my opinion, he actually managed to completely retain the spirit of the original and created a very faithful retelling of the entire tale. He did add dialogue and a few additional parts of world building and characterization here and there, which however in my opinion are never out-of-place or detrimental to the experience. If I hadn't read the original beforehand, I never would have even noticed what it was he added. (Oh, and he also got rid of the misogynistic parts!) So, if you don't want to go through the chore of the original (which is definitely quite the experience on its own, but can, as I said, be fairly tedious), but still want to experience this absolutely terrifying and fascinating Night Land, then I recommend you try Stoddard's re-telling.

...And no, I am NOT getting paid for this. This is my genuine, heartfelt recommendation for my fellow horror and Silent Hill fans out there. Because as someone fascinated by the concept of the Otherworld, I found the Night Land so incredibly captivating, filling me with this very odd and specific kind of terror that only Silent Hill's Otherworld so far was able to, that I just wish more people knew of it. It's quite the shame in my eyes that barely anyone knows about this story and its unique world.

So, there you have it. Sorry again for the wall of text, but if I could perhaps interest even one person in the Night Land with this, then it was already worth it. Thanks for your time!

And here's the audiobook of the original on Youtube:

As for Stoddard's book, I'm sure you can find that on your own! ;)

    So, Silent Hill 4...

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 06:16 AM PDT

Hello everyone, i recently finished sh3 (loved it, but 2 is still my favorite thus far) and i'm about to jump into 4 in a couple days. Now, i know The Room is the weird child of the sh family and the general consensus seems to be either love it or hate it with a passion, but is it really that different from the first 3 games? I heard it has lots of frustrating moments, reuse of areas and levels, annoying escort missions and weird inventory/chest management...how would you compare it to sh2 and 3? Is the story any good? And what about puzzles, combat, soundtrack and graphics? I'll play it on pc if that matters, any bugs or issues i should know before playing?

Silent hill: Origins for PS2 freezes when saving

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:48 AM PDT

The title says it all really. I'm angry, annoyed and £27 down the drain, in what seemed to be an enjoyable time.

The game will just not let me save. Every time I try the game freezes. I have tried several times at the first save point in the hospital and I have also tried at the butchers. The disk has been cleaned and has no marks, it just unfortunately doesn't want to work. I have seen similar problems mentioned online, so maybe it is down to the port, I don't know.

I think I would have liked this entry to the series. The throw back to silent hill 1 Was cool and the sound design kept me on my toes. Although so far I was yet to see anything new, just a typical silent hill romp.

On to another game I suppose
