Unpopular opinion: Maria is the most tragic character in the whole Silent Hill franchise Posted: 16 Nov 2019 02:07 PM PST That's what you just read. Not Alessa, not James, not Angela, but Maria, the pawn fabricated by Silent Hill with the sole purpose of punishing his respective story's main character. It's a dark background that could very well describe the mindless monsters you meet across the town, and Maria herself would fall into this category if not for one crucial point made clear by the Born From a Wish subplot: she's actually self aware. Her "birth", in every practical sense, could be compared to waking up as a functional adult, but all alone in a literal nightmare and devoid of any solid memories except for your own name. When Maria appears for the first time chronologically, she's confused, scared and even depressed, stating that she sees no reason to go on, but is too afraid to die, and besides, she needs to find someone else. Yes, we all know the reason for the later, but up until this point, Maria didn't, so, like a normal, social human being afflicted by isolation, she starts searching for anyone who could keep her company. Through the gameplay of that subplot, we get to know that she had shards of "memories" from the very beginning. Certain interactions bring up names and events related to the main plotline, and by the end of the whole thing, once all the pieces have been connected, Maria finally realizes the terrible truth behind her existence; That she's nothing more than a disposable, artificial being bound to the manifestation of a broken man's twisted psyche, and that she's trapped within this hellish scenario until the end of her brief purpose. The nightmare in which she was born also happens to be a dead end. Having this in mind, it's easy to understand why her last autonomous act before giving up to her hardwired "goal" was contemplating suicide. Just imagine yourself in her situation... The existential dread of going down such a horrible rabbit hole would probably be unbearable for anyone. [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 Nov 2019 02:12 PM PST OK, so I noticed something during Death Stranding that made me think about stuff and after double-checking everything, it seems to make sense. There are DS spoilers ahead which I've formatted appropriately (it seems excessive, but the whole thing may spoil DS so I'm not taking any chances. Only the first few sentences pertain to DS directly but if you've not played DS yet and/or don't want the latter moments of the game spoiled, don't read it.) So at the end of DS we learn that Sam's mother is a woman named Lisa Bridges, and taking as close a look as I can, she very very closely resembles Lisa's likeness, her facial structure is almost identical, and her body is thin and gaunt, although not 6 feet 8 inches tall (lol). Her relation of being Sam's mother made me think about P.T, and I think Norman's character was not just the player character, but the foetus in the sink. I know, batshit crazy, but hear me out. All the photographs appear to be old, the telephone isn't a modern land-line (no caller ID and is corded) the radio is from a bygone time, the lamp has a screw-in bulb, and the windows are single-glazing. All the indications are that it is some kind of dream sequence set in the past, and the fact that it's looping means that it's potentially a recurring dream. The radio announcer makes note that the perpetrators of the murders reported were both fathers, which could be the player character viewing the situation (or what he knows of it) through his own lens, so to speak. Lisa was stabbed to death in the bathroom, prematurely birthing the baby, which appears to survive in the sink. The radio also has overlapping speech about the father using an umbilical cord to hang himself, which isn't really possible, so (as many have already asserted) it's a metaphor for the pressures of fatherhood ultimately driving him to his own death. This could also be why Lisa's ghost is malevolent to the player, because she may have blamed the child and the pressures it placed upon them for her murder. People are going to point out that there's a reference to 'War of The Worlds' that states it aired 75 years previously, however before this, the voice states that he "tells the future" and so could very well be a deliberate anachronism on account of that. The collage of photo fragments, once collected, says on the back "My voice, can you hear it? This sign, can you read it? I'll wait forever if you'll just come to me". This may very well have set the events of Silent Hills in motion, Norman's character being consistently accosted with dreams of his dead mother. The voice from the radio that appear to be a delusional intrusion ("Don't trust the tap water", "Look behind you" and "Don't touch that dial now, we're just getting started") is the same voice that plays at the end, giving the speech "Dad was such a drag. (...) Yeah, he was just that kind of guy. But then one day, he goes and kills us all! He couldn't even be original about the way he did it. I'm not complaining... I was dying of boredom anyway, But guess what? I will be coming back, and I'm bringing my new toys with me." This is from the perspective of a child, who was a victim of the (attempted) murderer. If the voice of the delusions is identical to the monologue, we can reasonably deduce that the radio's voices are a manifestation of the (now adult) child's mind. Mental illness is a common theme in Silent Hill and it wouldn't surprise me if it were a plot device in Silent Hills, afflicting Norman's character. Given the persistent and intense public interest in P.T and Silent Hills, to this day Kojima is asked questions about it, and I believe he dropped that in DS as a little Easter egg so crackpot nutcases like me can try and put the pieces together, since he can't speak about it in any formal capacity. Thanks for reading, I appreciate it. Let me know what you think (Edited a kajillion times because formatting on mobile is a nightmare) [link] [comments]
