Death Stranding is giving me my Silent Hill fix.

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 08:06 PM PST

I don't want to give anything away, but if you can get over the "walking sim" aspect, (which I feel instead of just pressing forward to move, moving is a mini game in on itself) this game gives the creeps. I like to believe this is what would happen if the force behind Silent Hill went global. Again, don't want to say much more, but I'm digging this game. Only just got into it though, so my opinion might change. I didn't read too many reviews, but they seem to also mention Silent Hill. I think Kojima took some ideas for Silent Hills and brought them to this game. Also, don't let the "walking sim" stuff spook you, because, like Silent Hill, this is all about atmosphere.

Downpour and Origins were very lazy when it comes to bosses

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:12 PM PST

The one thing that stands out about Homecoming is enemy design - especially for the bosses. Every boss is creepy and unique. They also each serve a narrative purpose as representations of the founding families.

But not so with Origins and Downpour. Origins still keeps the traditional Silent Hill boss set up - but then it's really clear they reused assets. The father creature isn't unique to its own game. And all the boss fights were way too simple. The mother creature rips off the hospital boss from 2.. but it's less refined despite being a newer game. The Butcher is cool but you only fight it once and he's a joke. Pyramid Head is basically invincible for your first encounters. You have to literally run away from him. And in the end he intentionally takes so long to defeat that you feel helpless. The Butcher goes down in 3 minutes.

Downpour is even worse. It's really hard to even distinguish what counts as a boss encounter. There's a moment where you walk down to the lake and the 'Boogeyman' appears. There's a moment in the prison when you fight 2 prisoner minions and a juggernaut. There's the wheelman and then you play as the Bogeyman. Some people count the void chases and train sequence (lol) but I don't.

I like meaningful boss encounters. Technically 4 only has 2 boss battles but the main ghosts of each level were intentionally done. With Origins and Downpour it's really obvious they ran out of time. Downpour even has scenes that seem like they're meant for a boss encounter but it's just a normal doll or screamer .

    Replay – Silent Hill: Downpour

    Question about the town.

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 02:21 PM PST

If Silent Hill takes place in only one dimension - reality - then how do people still live there? James and Mary vacationed there post-Silent Hill 1, therefore the Otherworld had already changed the real world. Henry vactationed there, too, right? I think there is a quote or segment in The Real Silent Hill Experience about this. I wouldn't even mind just being linked that.

I don't believe everyone in town just dips so James can experience psychological torture at the hands of the town's unconscious, corrupted spiritual power.

What is the best current version of a P.T. remake/port for PC?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 12:51 PM PST

Title says it all. If the best version isn't readily downloadable anymore, is there a mirror i can find for it somewhere? I'd prefer an experience faithful to the OG game over a stable one, if that's possible.

Should I try GameStop for Silent Hill?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 12:51 PM PST

I finally got a PS2 and GameStop has surprisingly decent prices for SH2 and SH3. I'm not sure if I should pick up SH2 on Xbox or PS2 but I know I can only pick SH3 on PS2. GameStop has a good return policy and I'm fine with no cover since I can always just buy it later on, probably for the money I save buying it from GameStop.

What do you guys think? Any of you order from GameStop before?

Regarding the Western developed SH titles, at what point does paying homage turn into being creatively bankrupt?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 11:31 AM PST

A popular criticism of SH Origins, Homecoming and Downpour are how often they borrow from the original quadrilogy, ESPECIALLY the themes and designs of SH2. However, during my time in this sub, I've noticed more and more posters referencing this a neutral or even positive point and use the word "homage" instead of "copy". I'd like to hear some more thoughts on the subject. Do you feel any one of these games crossed the line of simple homage?

Why anime actor breathiness sounds Hentai. New voices in SH2.
