    Silent Hill

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 10:50 PM PDT

I was reading some old threads and people were mentioning how that game seriously messed up their adolescence emotionally/sexually. I have been wanting to play/watch someone play the Silent Hill series for a bit now but I happen to be very aware and protective of myself in those regards. Is this a universal experience? Why did people feel this way?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to leave a reply, I appreciate it. Happy quarantine!

I’m playing the HD collection on Xbox one. Here are my notes about the changes, bugs and particularities of the games and my final opinion of the remastered games themselves for those who’re interested.

SH2: - [ ] Lower contrast overall - [ ] Labyrinth elevator sfx loops noticeably - [ ] New dub sounds anime ish. James exhausted voice sounds like shit but overall it's really not that bad and It's a nice alternative to the OG voices - [ ] Weird momentary black splashes in cutscenes, especially the "I got a letter" one. - [ ] PH room fan sfx loops noticeably - [ ] Fog flickers on Eddies meat room - [ ] Yes, the lakes water looks like utter shit. No defending this one. I fail to understand how they messed this so badly - [ ] Small 1 second delay whenever you jump out of menus or maps. Pretty grating tbh - [ ] Really really really minor stuttering during other world silent hill running to rosewater - [ ] Prison stairs in the museum have lying figure footsteps that get louder as you descend instead of the creepy sfx in the original one. Artistic change I guess. Pretty shitty anyways - [ ] SH ranch in comic sans - [ ] Changed pick up sfx, higher tone - [ ] broken letterboxing in first enemy encounter - [ ] Lower(but not that bad) fog density. At times fog looks like an Instagram filter though - [ ] Momentary freeze when cutscenes begin. Not sure if this is because the Xbox one loads the game faster than the 360 and the game is unable to catch up or something, but in some cutscenes, like the Maria one after you exit the bowling, the freeze lasts more than other scenes - [ ] In new dub: Mary whispers in radio after killing lying figure are hard to hear - [ ] Lying figure crawling sounds like shit now and in some areas waking sound like shit too - [ ] Shadows in Laura hand stomping scene are messed up - [ ] Tv dead guy scream is inaudible - [ ] Pyramid head first appearance shadows are wrong - [ ] Shadow draw distance in apartments is jarring and noticeable - [ ] Fmvs look and sound super low quality, especially the Maria one in the hospital basement - [ ] Letterboxing when James is inside closet in PH rape scene is pretty shitty looking - [ ] All cutscenes have music sound loop when the songs end and restart - [ ] Maria's introductory scene draw distance in rosewater is still present and ugly as ever, AFAIK the 360 version never received a patch correcting this. It is what it is - [ ] Some lip sync issues in scenes. This varies from scene to scene. Not that noticeable though and I'm pretty sure this was also present ocasionally in ps2 version. BFAW introductory scene has pretty bad lip sync though - [ ] Fairy clean roads, kinda grating - [ ] Shotgun shells volume when hitting enemies always sound a little bit stronger for some reason

-[ ] Creepy whispers in blue creek apartment were not present in my game or maybe I couldn't hear them. My hearing is fine and the sound coming out of my tv is solid btw - [ ]Texture flickering. Especially noticeable in Angela's mirror room scene with the paintings - [ ] In low health, if controller is vibrating when opening a door, it will keep vibrating strongly until the door opening transition is over - [ ] Pig scream in other world Brookhaven basement stairs loops every time you move, instead of playing once in the original version whenever you pass through - [ ] Game slows down when the camera focuses the door on Maria's hospital sick room - [ ] Subtitles syncing issues at times, like the Q&A in the elevator and Maria's first death - [ ] Marias getting impaled by PH spear in her first death sound effect is missing - [ ] Lauras lip sync in restaurant scene is a little off - [ ] Brightness of the game is low overall, especially noticeable in the hotel basement where you don't have your flashlight - [ ] Boiler room sound loops noticeably - [ ] Marias getting impaled by the pyramid heads sound is missing again, plus, the infamous teeth eye bug is still present :/ - [ ] Pyramid head room sounds loop - [ ] Pyramid heads suicide sound effect volume is fairly low - [ ] Mary and James conversation in the hotel hallway didn't played for me for some reason... - [ ] And yeah, that's pretty much it, that's all I could notice about this game

Overall, yes, it's not perfect, but at least for me and probably many of you here, folks who have already played the game to exhaustion on the ps2, it's fine. It plays and looks ok. There's problems and shit but it's perfectly playable for the occasional replay here and there. DEFINITELY not recommended for those who wanna play 2 for the first time, if you are one of those people would either recommend you to go and emulate the game, to play the pc enhanced version or to simply get a cheap and modded pa2 and get the iso of the game, unless you're a collector and you have the patience to go and shell a good amount of money for an original copy, it's on you.

Haven't went through BFAW yet as I'm a little bit busy right now and I'd rather play other games rn, so... yeah. I must admit that in previous posts I defended this collection on a constant basis but that posture came from my ignorance. This is certainly not a perfectly viable way to play the game but it is passable overall.

SH3: - [ ] Really really small sluggishness when opening doors - [ ] Music is very much reworked and sounds different - [ ] Weird motion blur inside the mall hallways at the beggining - [ ] Really really small stuttering in the hallway when you first meet the dinosaur like purple monsters(don't remember their names) - [ ] Brightness here is ridiculously low, had to increase my tv brightness manually - [ ] Transitions here are perfect, no small second delay like in SH2 when exiting menus or map - [ ] Better lip sync overall i guess - [ ] Changed sfx in Claudia introductory scene, Heather headache no longer includes weird demonic moans in - [ ] You can't see enemies on the lower floors of the third floor of the mall with the staircase to the boss at the center - [ ] First boss entrance sound is out of sync - [ ] Game froze on me when firing first shot to the boss lol. Lost all my fucking progress smh

...my thoughts on 3 will probably take a little bit more time, as you can tell lol.

That's all for now. Hope this helped you.

Difficulty Installing Silent Hill 2 on PC

    Posted: 01 Apr 2020 01:53 PM PDT

I've been dying to play Silent Hill 2 for a while, and I finally decided to give it a shot, the only problem is, I'm having some trouble installing it on PC. I was able to actually install the game from the ISO files previously, but something went wrong with them so I decided to start over, except now, whenever I try to install, it stops, and says, "error extracting support files: catastrophic error". I'm running Windows 10 if that's any help. I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue and knew how I might be able to fix it. Thanks for the help!
