Just got the strategy guide for SH4. Wanted to share some of the cool concept art in the back

I redrew some near decade old fanart I made of Lisa recently, found this sub and decided to share!

My friend has been wanting a PS2 for a long time so he could play SSX Tricky. He got one and yesterday he came up to me asking if there's anything in particular that I think he and his girlfriend would enjoy playing. They sure love a good story! I can't wait to awaken the magic of SH2 within them!

Silent Hill 3: Enhanced Edition [PROPOSAL]

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 07:08 PM PDT

Silent Hill 3 (PS2) is nearly identical to Silent Hill 3 (PC). However, there are still some minor things holding the PC version back from being the definitive edition

Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition (PC) is an on-going project that takes the original, very buggy PC port (also sourced from a lesser Xbox port), to bring it closer to the PS2 version with widescreen and support for modern hardware. I wish to facilitated something similar, but on a much smaller scale than was necessary for SH2.

Below are solutions to brings Silent Hill 3 (PC) closer to the PS2 version in a similar way to Silent Hill 2. Some are solved, some are suggestions. I am currently playing through the game on PC and PS2 and comparing and will update as more things are discovered.

    - Widescreen [SOLVED]

[PROBLEM]: 4:3 Aspect Ration only, FOV too wide showing incorrect animations in some scenes

[SOLUTION]: Install Silent Hill 3 PC Fix by Steam006 OR Silent Hill 3 Widescreen Fix by ThirteenAG

    - Silent Hill 2 References [SOLVED]

[PROBLEM]: Some dialogue strings and one cutscene are missing from the PC version.

[SOLUTION]: Install Silent Hill 3 PC Fix OR Silent Hill Widescreen FixSee above.

    - Hope House/Wish House discrepancy [SOLVED]

[PROBLEM]: The memo in Brookhaven S1 incorrectly references SH4's 'Wish House' as 'Hope House'

[SOLUTION]: Download msg.arc_new. Rename msg.arc_new to msg.arc. Copy to the install directory: Silent Hill 3 --> data. Click 'yes' to overwrite. (Always back up your data!)

(Note: This also removes two references to "The Organization"/"The Order" and is replaced with more vague terminology such as "the cult" and "they" to retain the original Japanese language ambiguity. I made this for personal use and can be further tweaked using Editor for Silent Hill 2/3 Resources.)

    - Harry and Lisa VOs missing

[PROBLEM]: The flashback voice-over for Harry in the Hilltop Center and the VHS recording of Lisa in the Nightmare Hospital are missing.

[SOLUTION?]: Likely, the call to the audio files is still there and has simply been disabled or the volume turned all the way down.

Note: Just found Harry's line in the PC data. It's located in:

    Silent Hill 3\data\sound\demo_afs\bu2f.afs

You can listen to (and extract?) the file with Silent Hill's Sound Explorer. Harry's VO is e198.adx

    - Sound effects compressed [SOLVED?]

[PROBLEM?]: Allegedly, the sound files on the PC version are of lower quality than the PS2. (Looking to verify.)

[SOLUTION?]: Silent Hill 3 PC Sound Fix. Have not confirmed, playing through now.

    - Missing PS2 Costumes

[PROBLEM] Many T-shirt style costumes with promotional (and some defunct) brand names are missing.

[SOLUTION?]: Mostly, meh. However, there may still be a similar call to them in game but simply have their unlockable passwords disabled. (A similar scenario was found in FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 where the promotional Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect costumes were disabled only to be re-enabled by modders later. All speculative stuff here.)

If there are any other issues you guys have noted, please let me know and I'll add them up here.(Please forgive my formatting scrambling.)

Gameplay and Control Concept for Future Silent Hill Games

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 06:14 PM PDT

NOTE: Story and inventive enemy design definitely should be first priority.

I totally understand why old Silent Hill games had intentionally bad controls to add to the tension. It 100% works. I am currently playing through SH2 again for the first time in years, and am squirming way more than I anticipated.

Though those controls are effective, there is no way a AAA horror game should rely on that today. There has to be a better way to induce dread without having ro rely on sloppy controls.

Finding another route, where the player has complete/comfortable control over their actions, while still making combat intimidating and realistic, is the rout I feel the series should take.

    GAMEPLAY CONCEPT

I always felt a much slower twist on the Soulsborne combat formula could work extremely well in a survival horror setting. Enemies wont respawn like in Souls games, but having enemies pose such a serious threat to the player will add so much to the tension. If fighting melee, every enemy has to be learned and taken very seriously.

Melee can either be mastered or mostly avoided. Many enemies dont need to be killed at all. Silent Hill is not a game about combat, but the option should be there if you want the challenge.

A handgun will become available pretty soon into the game, giving some early game relief. A shotgun and a rifle will come later. Nothing automatic. Ammo is tight but if you choose your shots well, you should manage to scrape by.

Having the gun allows the game to be more accessible, while still allowing close enemies to be a real threat. Silent Hill isnt a game about difficulty, yet having extremely dangerous enemies, that can kill you within seconds, is panic inducing even with a gun in your hand. This will force players to take every moment slowly and cautiously.

    SAVING

The game should work on a save point system like older titles. Frequent checkpoints destroy tension. Checkpoints should only show up right before a point of no return, such as a cutscene or bossfight. Just so nobody gets screwed.

The camera should, for the most part, closely follow the player, with frequent moments of fixed angles. Aiming in fixed angles will use auto aim.

The game will never fully pause. Healing, looking at the map and reloading all happens in real time within the game.

    INVENTORY

Opening the inventory puts the world into ultra slow motion. This will to the player never feeling fully at ease. Inventory shows player status, weapons, notes, items, etc. There is no limit to inventory but you can only carry one of each weapon. Inventory management shouldn't have to be worried about.

There are two equipable health slots for quick access, two weapon slots and one slot of quick access notes.

    WEAPON DURABILITY

Many melee weapons will break. Their durability will effect their overall power. Certain weapons will break easier on different enemy types. But, something as weak as a knife can also take a long time to break if used on a soft enemy.

Many unbreakable weapons will be slightly hidden throughout the game. Basically, weapons you wouldnt expect to break, dont break. This makes it so the player always has something that can get them through combat. Many beakable melee weapons may work better against certain enemies, but any unbreakable weapon can get the job done.

    DAMAGE

Enemies inflict brutal damage on the player. The players arms, legs, head, and torso each individually take damage when struck. Damage to the legs or arms, cause them to be less effective. Damaged arms make melee, blocking and aiming less effective. Injured legs make the player move slower, limp, and have more of a chance of stumbling/falling.

Damage is shown realistically on the players body as well as the enemy's, based on where they are hit.

    CONTROLS

The basic controls are very much based around the Dark Souls control scheme. The way the buttons are set up, really makes you feel connected to the gameplay, which is very important when creating immersion.

Here's a set up that I think could work pretty well.

    Set for a PS4

LEFT STICK - MOVE CHARACTER - Moves character around. Speed is based on push strength. Speed ranges from a slow walk to a light jog.

    L3 - FLASHLIGHT ON/OFF

RIGHT STICK - CAMERA/AIM/ LOCK ON SWITCH - Adjusts the camera and aims guns. - While locked on, the player can switch between enemies.

    R3 - CROUCH - Click to crouch/stand.

/\ (Triangle) - TWO HAND/ONE HAND WEAPON - Switches between holding a melee weapon or gun with one or two hands. Melee weapons are more powerful when swung with two hands and guns are more accurate.

    □ - STOMP/KICK - Stomps on downed enemies. - Clumsily kicks away the enemy. Does hardly any damage to average enemies, it is mainly used to get distance. - Kicks inflict more damage to small enemies. - Kicks can sometimes be countered by enemies.

    ○ - DODGE/RUN - If tapped the player clumsily dodges away from the enemy. - If held, the player runs quickly. Slows and gets tired after a while.

X - INTERACT/VAULT - Interacts with different prompts around the game. - Climbs over small ledges, counters, furniture, etc. Speed based on left stick. Full speed vaults have a 1 in 5 chance of causing the player to fall.

    TOUCHPAD - Open/close inventory menu.

    D - PAD

(UP) - MAP -Pulls out a map. Doesnt pause the game.

(LEFT) - HEAL - Uses a Health Drink or Medikit. - While holding left, a prompt to pick between your two health equip slots (L1, R1) appears.

Health drinks take two seconds to drink. You can only walk while drinking. - Medikits take about 10 seconds to use. - The act of healing with medikits can be briefly interrupted (Combat, quickly moving, etc), three times before all progress is lost. - The bandage will slowly begin to fall off the longer it remains unfinished.

(RIGHT) - SWITCH WEAPON - Quickly switched between your two equipped weapons.

(DOWN) - NOTE - Player can equip a note for quick access.

    MELEE COMBAT

    • Every movement made by the player has a clear weight behind it. The player's animations take time and move at a realistic speed. The player is not a superhero.

    • As said before, melee is learnable but extremely dangerous (like real life) and will mainly be used as a last resort if you're low on ammo, or by players really who enjoy the challenge.

    MELEE COMBAT - NO WEAPON

NOTE: Fighting without a weapon inflicts next to no damage on most enemies.

L1 - GUARD/LOCK ON - Holding locks on to enemy - Holding L1 puts the left arm up in a ready position, guarding the players body and face. The left arm takes reduced damage while blocking. It can sometimes successfully swat away incoming attacks.

L2 - PUSH - Left arm pushes enemy back. Push strength is based on how quickly you pull the trigger. Pushes can occasionally be countered by enemies.

R1 - LIGHT PUNCH - Light right arm punch.

R2 - HEAVY PUNCH - Heavy right arm punch. Power based on how fast the trigger is pulled. Release trigger to pull back for another punch.

MELEE - WEAPON - ONE HANDED

L1 - GUARD/LOCK ON - Lock on to enemy and block with left hand like before.

L2 - PUSH - Push with left hand like before.

R1 - LIGHT ATTACK - Light attack with weapon in right hand.

R2 - HEAVY ATTACK - Heavy attack with right hand weapon. Power based on trigger pull speed. - After successful hit, release the trigger to pull back for another swing. Same applies to two hands.

    MELEE - TWO HAND WEAPON

L1 - GUARD - Guards and deflects with the weapon in two hands. Some weapons are more effective than others. -Locks on to enemy.

L2 - PUSH - Each weapon has a different variation of what this move is. They all consist of pushing with both hands on weapon.

R1 - LIGHT ATTACK - Light two hand attack.

R2 - HEAVY ATTACK - Heavy two hand attack based on trigger pull speed.

    GUN CONTROLS - ONE HANDED

    Gun held in right hand.

L1 - GUARD - Guard with left hand.

L2 - PUSH - Push with left hand

R1 - AIM - Holding R1 aims the weapon. The camera pulls in right behind the players shoulder.

    R2 - SHOOT

    GUN CONTROLS - TWO HAND

L1 - GUARD - Player uses arm and gun to deflect attacks.

    L2 - AIM

    R1 - RELOAD

    R2 - SHOOT

How much time does SH2 take place after Mary's death?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2020 10:11 AM PDT

Probably the answer is in the game but there's something that makes me think about it.

Does the game takes place soon after Mary's death? Because if Mary's corpse is in the trunk, I don't think James going to carry around a stinky full of bugs decaying corpse lol

Let me know if there's some real answer to my question.

I've read lots of things about SH2 since is my favorite game but my chronic pain makes me forget things.

    Thanks in advance.
