    Announcing a game for PS5, then Sony's labels all over, then a dark hallway in first person, they were definitely taking stabs at Silent Hill. My disappointment is massive.

    I'm not sure what you guys did to deserve this, but it's almost poetic in a way. Silent hill features characters being trapped in a nightmarish, twisted, altered version of reality, like how we have watched the past year's New SH Game rumours crop up and turn out to be false in the end.

    The heart of Silent Hill is love, not horror nor fear. This is why I think it’s the best and most impactful horror series of all time.

    For the love of your daughter (SH1)

    For the love of your wife (SH2)

    For the love of your father (SH3)

    For the love of your brother (SH:HC)

    For the love of your son (SH:DP)

    All these characters are motivated by something other than fear. Many are in Silent Hill to atone for their sins, but what drives them forwards and grants them the ability to drudge further through the horrors of Silent Hill is love.

    I think Akira Yamaoka does a great job in conveying this emotion through his music with the opening of Silent Hill 2 being incredibly emotional and heartfelt.

    This introduction is not something typical of a horror game and why I believe Silent Hill has resonated so strongly with many, because it embodies an emotion stronger than fear, yet equally relatable.

    James needed Pyramid Head to punish him for his sins, this much is true. But he also needed him to prove his love for Mary, an obstacle to overcome so that he may understand he did not hate her.

    James says to Mary in the very end, "The truth is... I hated you". But he becomes set free when Mary proves this wrong, with her final words to James being, "You made me happy."

    Ultimately, James just needed Mary to know that, despite what he did, he still loved her, and that's where the crux of his suffering lay. He needed to come to terms with the fact he loved his wife and his actions did not discredit that love.

    The greatest suffering we can face is hurting the ones we love, James embodies this suffering. Silent Hill did not punish him, he punishes himself regardless. Silent Hill was his ultimate path of understanding and self forgiveness.
