Alright, so maybe I just spent ~$150 getting Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4. But now I get to experience them for the first time.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:13 AM PDT

Usually I'm a super casual gamer - like, I'd play on-and-off and finish a game over the course of a year or two, depending on how long the game is. However, with this self-quarentine and everything, I finally decided to hunker down and finish my copy of Resident Evil 4 that I've been playing for the last year and a half. Now I'm on a survival-horror kick, and I figured I'd finally check out Silent Hill after hearing so much good about the series. So, after seeing the hatred for the HD PS3 release, I scoured ebay and other websites to be able to find PS2 copies of 2, 3, and 4, and finally completed my search yesterday.

I'm very excited to start! Especially excited to play 4, because that seems super relevant to our current situation. 😅

    Finally Experienced Silent Hill 2

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:14 AM PDT

I've been gaming since the glory days of the PS2, but as a kid my mother never allowed me to have any games that were rated M no matter how hard I tried to get her to let me. I don't know that I would've even touched this game back then. It wasn't until I was around 13 that I started to get really into horror games and horror in general. I became consumed by the terrors some people were able to create through well thought out creepypastas and horror movies. I managed to settle for some horror games akin to Slender and FNAF, since they were big at the time.

Fast forward to March of this year: I'm in my third year of college, living with my best friend/roommate who happens to be just as much of a gamer and cinephile as I am. Right as the outbreak causes all of the colleges across the country to move online for the rest of the semester, he brings his PS2 and all of his games back to our apartment with him. I don't think I would've been that enthralled if I was still attending class physically, but the fact that we had an extra week of spring break made me want to relive some of my memories, some of his, and some that we shared. The day after, we talked in the morning before running some errands. Chatting about how great these games were and the games we wish we could've played. The conversation quickly turned to the Silent Hill franchise, and how neither of us had gotten to experience them. It was just one of those feelings where the stars just align and we knew we had to have our hands on it. Living in the city helped as a store about 5 min from our place sold games on all different consoles. After searching for about 10 min in the "S" section, we were out of luck, so we searched for other games.

Of course, I'm sure everyone here knows though that that town has a way of bringing people back to it. Hidden amongst a different section of the PS2 games sat Silent Hill 2 on the shelf. $45. Pretty steep for a PS2 game but we knew it was now or never. We snagged it, and waited until it was dark out to play.

At first, I didn't see what all the hype was about. I thought it was decent and had great atmosphere, but as a game I thought it fell a little flat. I figured I wouldn't end up finishing it. But each morning I woke up after that, I had the same thought. I wanted to play it. Not because it was a classic or to fulfill some checklist, but because I legitimately wanted more of that atmosphere.

I loved every second of playing that game. I became so immersed in a game from almost 2 decades ago despite its graphics and voice acting because it's atmosphere and story and tone and characters were so interesting. I really believe the hype didn't lie on this one. This game is great. I hope one day it sees a proper remaster that shows care for the original.

What are your other favourite gaming franchises?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:37 PM PDT

Since nothing has come out of SH in a while it's not hard to imagine the fans have been occupying their time playing other games. So I'm wondering, what other games do the SH community like playing in their spare time? Not necessarily horror, just gaming in general :)

I'm obviously pretty big on survival horror, I love The Evil Within, I'm only just getting into RE now but it's awesome, and Outlast is one of my "guilty pleasure" franchises (I love both of those games to death don't judge me)

I'm also pretty big on souls games, I've put countless hours into Bloodborne and I love DS1 and 2, Sekiro is amazing from what I've played as well and I haven't tried DeS or DS3 yet.

Other than that I play a lot of COD, GTA 5 and stuff like that when I'm gaming with friends.

I'm curious to see everyone's answers!

What’s the order of appearance for the Silent Hill 2 OST?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 02:52 PM PDT

The track list is mixed up and I can't find anything anywhere. In what order do they appear in the game?

    In defense of Homecoming

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:07 PM PDT

I realize it's not beloved and is far from what people would call a "Silent Hill game" but....

Can we at least take a step back to appreciate the sheer cruelty and horror of its story and twist? From the fact the main character tries to find his brother if only to find he was the reason his brother died, to the curse and how parents were forced to brutalize their children.

It dealt with extremely strong content and had some memorable set pieces(I'll never forget Scarlet or Asphyxia). Their mistake was losing sight of the games soul and turning it into a terrible action game. Had it been survival horror like 3, I think it would have stood as a return to good form.

It's a perfect example of good concept but bad execution.

    What

Homecoming has the best graphics even though it came out on 2008

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:05 PM PDT

Downpour and Shattered Memories contain more consistent stories, but Homecoming has truly breath taking art direction even if the brown and gray palette is used too much. The lighting effects in Homecoming look like a modern triple A game. Step into city hall and look at the window. In Downpour all the windows have the EXACT same frosted appearance and the natural light is incredibly fake looking.

Furthermore you can actually see when you're doing damage on the monsters in Homecoming. The blades cause blood slashes. Bosses lose their outer protection. In Downpour the only monster that really responds like that is the doll.

I like the art design Downpour was TRYING to go towards. It looks more like a New England town. Silent Hill in 2-3, Origins and Homecoming always felt like it was a southern or midwestern town just by the aesthetics so kudos to Downpour. But the asset flipping is WAY too obvious.

I showed my friends the graphics Downpour without going into any cut scenes and they thought Silent Hill 4 looked more modern than Downpour.

As for animation, Homecoming uses far more notions. I actually think 3 and Shattered Memories have the best facial movements. Downpour has the best character models but they're not animated NEARLY as well as 3-4. Homecoming is hit or miss. You could tell they were rushing the game after Alex arrives at SH.

Academic Research Survey about a Horror Video Game Experience - Results!

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:57 AM PDT

Hi everyone. Some of you might remember my previous post in this sub. I was recruting participants for an online Study about frightening horror video games.

At this point I would like to thank the mods again for letting me post (and recruit) in the sub. Thanks! It really meant a lot!

Some of you asked me to share the results of the study with the sub as soon as the study will be completed. Unfortunately, the study got scraped about half year after my post. My boss got a job offer as an assistant professor in a different department, which she obviously took. I also stopped working as a student research assistant to get more experience in the privat sector. As a result there simply wasn't anyone who continued with the paper. However, I've integrated some results of the study in my master thesis. I'm sorry that I cannot offer you a report of the whole results, but hey, better than nothing.

So yeah, here ya go: https://www.swisstransfer.com/d/dba0157a-60bf-4c2c-aecc-5b4380498976

The Link will be up for 30 days.

Obviously, if you have any questions about the study, feel free to ask.

My favorite passage/monologue in any video game. (Slight SH3/SH1 spoilers)

    Posted: 14 May 2020 11:30 PM PDT

"I hope this will never come to any use; maybe its better if you never know. More than anything else, I fear the possibility of your going away, far from me.

But sometimes we have to tell the truth. That's why I'm writing this, before I'm lost in Death and Oblivion.

What happened back then? That has something to do with who you are.

It all started 24 years ago. Coming back from a vacation, my wife and I found a baby on the side of a highway. Since we were childless, we thanked God for letting us meet this child...this girl. We took her home.

3 years later, my wife died, and another 4 years later -- 17 years ago -- I came to Silent Hill. I heard the girl's pleas and took her with me, not knowing why she wanted us to go there.

And it was there that the girl went away. Not that she went anywhere, nor did she die. "Returned to her original self"...that's what Dahlia Gillespie said.

"Original self"... That was the young woman burned by her mother as a sacrifice to God...Alessa Gillespie.

Half her soul escaped in those flames and went on the live in a baby...in that girl of mine. Of ours.

7 years passed before the half-a-girl returned to Silent Hill and made Alessa whole again. Newly strengthened, she vowed to kill God.

God, a fetus nestled in this sacrificial girl's womb, was summoned with the usual rites. This was Alessa's wish, no matter what the outcome --- even if her own existence were at stake.

But that wish was not granted. My interruption meant she prayed instead for the girl's return. I alone couldn't bring her back.

Dahlia did it --- I only helped at the birthing ceremony, to bring God out of Alessa.

The newly-born God wailed once and was dead. All from that girl's --- and probably Alessa's --- conscious resistance.

That's not the end. After God had vanished in a glow of light, Alessa reappeared and gave me a baby. She looked alot like that girl so long ago.

And then Alessa was gone, dead. There was nothing I could have done to help. I simply clutched the baby to my chest and ran off.

The whole thing felt like a dream, but I had proof that it wasn't. The girl was nowhere to be found, and in my arms...the baby.

Now 17 years have passed. It feels like only yesterday, and again it feels like a million years ago.

I confess I had reservations at first about raising the baby. Could I love her? Her existence was thoroughly unexplainable.

I thought, "She could be the young woman who snatched away my daughter." That led to sadness, anger... there were times when I put my hands around her tiny little throat.

Several times I even considered abandoning her. That's what a terrible person I am.

But I decided to raise her after all. I just couldn't seem to let her go. When she...when you look at me, you laugh, so...

Even now, I can't forget about that girl. But I love you. I have no doubts about that. That's all I ask you to believe.

To my precious daughter... Harry Mason"

Playing silent hill 1 for the 1st time and i think it’s bugged

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:33 AM PDT

Just got to the lighthouse and I have to go back through the sewer to find cybil. Whenever I interact with the manhole cover it will not let me enter, but will keep repeating the text over and over again. I'm assuming it's bugged but I figured i'd ask. Any ideas?

Silent Hill 4 DL for PC

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:46 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm looking to get a DL for SH4 on PC. I recently got SH2 off a website and had no issues at all (needed to virtual disk mount but worked a treat!)

    Anyone got tips?

    Silent Hill 2 Emulation Issue

    Posted: 15 May 2020 06:05 AM PDT

I'm using a Dualshock 4 controller running DS4Windows (with PS4 hidden option) on PCSX2 and I can't use the flashlight. In fact, I have to hold R2 in order to use X to inspect or use any item, and once the flashlight is turned on via the options menu it turns right off again and is unuseable. If I don't hold R2, when I press X the highlighted selection of the item quickly sort of "bounces" off of the Use/Examine menu. Like if you quickly went to use it but backed out immediately.

I played SH2 years ago when I had a PS2 so I don't think it's a me issue. Anyone had this issue or know a fix? I tried swapping control styles but they don't solve the issue or have their own problems.
