Spirit of silent hill in films etc

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 11:54 AM PST

I discovered silent hill 2 when I was quite young and it definitely has influenced me as a person, my art and my taste. What I love the most about it is a combination of disturbing otherworldly aesthetics and tragedy. The game throws you into the world which is not trying to scare you, but just is the way it is. It's not ghosts, it's not monsters, it is a surreal tool that disects main characters soul in a way.
So of course I've been all over those Silent Hill influences. Art of Francis Bacon comes to mind, which in itself have influenced movies such as Jacob's Ladder (pretty much a SH2 the movie) or David Lynch (Twin Picks, Eraserhead etc come to mind), Kubrick's Shining. All of these are familiar to SH fans. I am also interested in less obvious representations of that SH feel. They're not necessarily direct influences and it doesn't even has to be psychological horror. All of these have given me a similar experience that I had with SH. Here are some that I have experienced over the years and can recommend to any Silent Hill fans:

Possession (1981) The film starts out as a divorce drama, which later turns into surreal horror. It is highly expressive and intense in terms of acting (some people might even call it overacting). The portrayal of an unhinged hysteria and psychosis in this movie can definitely be uncomfortable and uncompromising for some. It goes all the way and with no breaks on.

Any Cronenberg film. Some that I have seen include Naked Lunch, Fly, existenz, videodrome. Cronenberg offers his own brand of otherworldly fleshy aesthetics, which definitely has influenced Silent Hill, but it seems it is not as widely discussed.

Come and See I am throwing this with a caution as a controversial recommendation as it is a war movie and hyperrealstic in that, but it portrays the horror in a highly expressive way which gave me similar shivers I got from SH. A highly intense watch and be warned: not for the faint of heart. In a way it is in line with movie such as Apocalypse now, but it is uncompromising in its portrayal of wars horror. The movie is told through the eyes of a boy and his experiences with the horror of war. One of the most intense coming of age stories or there.

Antichrist Probably my favorite movie by Lars von Trier, who essentially attempted to simply make a classic horror movie in his own vision. A lot of the tropes which can be traced all the way to Evil Dead (secluded cabin) are turned upside down and subverted, creating this avant-garde experience. It is a psychological horror with a sense that something otherworldly and disturbing is coming. Contains gore.

Vivarium (2019) A recent one I've seen, in which a couple is trapped in an empty city, from which they cannot get out and weird surreal shit is happening around them. I can see SH influences in this movie and I believe any fan should see it. Pretty close to how I imagine a good movie adaptation of SH should be like and probably closest we get. Completely different aesthetics though.

The Lighthouse (2019) If you haven't seen this film definitely give it a watch. It is true that it is closest in spirit to Lovecraft, which in itself had influenced Silent Hill.

VVitch A recent horror movie, by same director as The Lighthouse (Robert Eggers) about a family in 1630s New England torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic, and possession.

These are just at the top of my head. Throw some of your suggestions and I might update list later!

EDIT: I am including some of your guys suggestions here and some other movies I have seen: Night Shift: a Netflix b-movie which captures SH spirit of horror pretty close. Not a terrible movie, not great either, but it is tense and great for what it is.

Session 9 This is rather a psychological thriller than horror, but I can definitely see how it could've influenced Silent Hill.

Hereditary A recent horror I've seen. I loved it on a first watch, but on a second watch it felt a lot thinner than I thought. It had fantastic sense of dread, I just wish it had something less trite than a cult.

Some suggestions from you guys I haven't seen yet and would be interested to check out: Sam was here Sekiro

Also in Witcher 3: Heart of stone There are plenty of silent hillish moments especially towards the end.

I made an Advertising campaign for the next Silent Hill...

Hi guys! Like the title says, I made an advertising campaign for the still rumoured next Silent Hill game (hope it becomes true). I´ve graduated this summer in Advertising and PR and while searching a job in this difficult times, I did this fictional campaign to add to my portfolio. You can check it out on my Behance profile.

Used to own silent hill on the ps1, shattered memories for the psp, 2 and 3 on the ps2. Gave them to a girl to impress her for free, a couple years ago. Well damn, started my ps2 collection up months ago, and found out all the games are rare as an alien eating a vegan burrito!
